Four years ago today, we were all
anticipating the landfall of a storm named Katrina. None of us could have
imagined how different our lives would become in 24 hours. But for many people
in five states, our lives were changed forever—“What a Difference a Day Makes!” The same is true throughout our lives and careers. Many
times we are faced with decisions or dilemmas and often only have a brief
period in which to decide the path to take—and that decision can forever impact
our lives as well as many lives around us. As we embrace the challenges life
throws our way, we must do so with courage and grace; and, this is not often easy
or painless. Looking back over the four years since Katrina, some have fared
well and others are still struggling. Some are building up and some are still
tearing down. Some have permanently moved away and others are moving in. Change
abounds. AGA has been part of the recovery by contributing funds
through the National Community Service Fund (NCSF) and by being on the ground
in New Orleans in the Ninth Ward working with Habitat for Humanity on almost a
dozen houses over the last three years. You have contributed almost $200,000
through AGA’s NCSF and over 75 folks have contributed their physical labor in
(and personal funds to get to) New Orleans. Now, our country is facing very difficult economic times. Many
of us have stepped up to the plate to make sure the funds distributed through
ARRA and TARP are being appropriately spent and tracked. We are educating
ourselves through the many leadership and educational workshops and conferences
AGA is sponsoring; and, we are working diligently to provide proper
accountability and transparency to our publics. Thank you for your service to the citizens of our country. As
a Mississippian, I thank the thousands of you who came and volunteered your
time and money to help us rebuild. I was on the Mississippi Gulf Coast this
past weekend—much has improved; but, so much still needs to be done. Just remember, “What a Difference a Day Makes!” “Think Big! Act Courageously! Make a Difference!”
